I have recently been appointed as the UK agent for Morsan Farms Ltd. For those of you who have not heard of Morsan, this is a 3500 head dairy unit in Alberta, Western Canada. Alongside the 900 head milking herd, which includes commercial as well as pure bred Holsteins, is an elite cattle business.
At Morsan there are now over 300 of the world’s greatest cow families- and there is no one else with such a range of genetics on offer.
The farm itself is impeccably well run and has to be seen to be believed (regular trips will be run and you are welcome and encouraged to join them, seeing the set up is truly breathtaking and Western Canada has a lot to offer). The business itself is based on high levels of stockmanship, integrity and family. Morris and his wife Sandra have been very welcoming to me, as they are with everyone they come across, if fact everyone in the business is very approachable.
Morris handles the commercial cattle sales side of the business which sees between 1000 and 1500 freshly calved heifers traded each year. His son Henry manages the farm on a day to day basis (at only 24) and his middle son Greg runs the hospital and maternity units. Chris Parry (who I previously worked with at Semex), emigrated to join the business as marketing manager just over 4 years ago, and Chris runs the pedigree side of the Morsan business.
Apart from the 16 stall show barn, there is no preferential treatment, but the show cows are worked with all year round enabling their trips into the show ring to be very genuine. With so many great individuals it’s a constant juggle to decide which animals get a space in the show barn! However dividends are being paid, with Morsan boasting 56 All American and All Canadian nominations in the last five years.
With respect to the embryo side of the business, there is scope for you to invest in families offering index, show type, bull mothers, you name it. Back up is second to none, with Morsan offering a tremendous guarantee of satisfaction. They will guarantee 50% conception rates on embryos sold (limited restrictions apply), and they also aim to help you nurture and develop your investment, just ask for examples.
I am convinced by their business, which is here for the long run, and most importantly the cattle speak for themselves.
If you would like to see a full list of cows and embryos available please get in touch for more information. A selection of the current embryos can be selected from HERE
